New video format: craftguide lowers entry barrier for digitalization in the craft sector

3D and video tutorials now also available in augmented reality

Sample courses from Stiebel Eltron, fischer and Cosmo provide a first impression

craftguide, provider of digital content for training and further education in trade and industry, has created a low entry barrier for its customers to initiate the in-house digitization process with the new video format: Skilled personnel can independently create step-by-step instructions for work processes on the machine from the user's perspective and pass on their practical knowledge without detours. The video format can be used as it is or taken as a template for 3D tutorials that craftguide creates together with the CAD machine data. What's special about craftguide's cross-device approach is that users can choose how they want to access the video or 3D tutorials: either via the craftguide app on a smartphone or tablet, via a web player, or via virtual reality or augmented reality glasses.

Further down in the text you will find sample tutorials from some customers to click through or watch.

Start-up from Munich provides a digital platform for the skilled trades together with machine manufacturers and educational institutions

The Munich-based start-up provides interactive operating and maintenance instructions for service technicians and craftsmen, as well as basic training courses for initial and further vocational training. For this purpose, craftguide combines the product knowledge of machine and plant manufacturers with the application knowledge of educational institutions and, with its platform, provides the digital infrastructure to distribute the produced content via any device and channel.

There are currently around 300 courses on the platform. craftguide supports its customers in creating learning units quickly and easily and in subdividing the work and text sections didactically. The knowledge content is therefore easily scalable.

Cross-device approach: one content, many devices

craftguide app:

Whether for setup, repair, maintenance, training or everyday operation - with the craftguide app, the craftsman, service technician or trainee has the necessary expertise in the form of video or 3D tutorials in his pocket. This guides them step by step through the work process on the machine or through craftwork techniques. In addition, intuitive symbols, pop-up windows with information and colored highlights on even the smallest components in the 3D version guide the user quickly and safely through the work process. With the download function in the craftguide app, users work independently of network access. This can be very useful, especially in the countryside or in basements with poor network coverage.

Augmented reality (AR) glasses:

More plastic and without the use of hands, the use of AR glasses works, combining the virtual content with the real world. For example, a screen floating in space with step-by-step instructions can be placed next to the physically real machine and used interactively.

Virtual reality (VR) goggles:

VR courses, on the other hand, immerse the user in a completely artificial or simulated reality in which he or she interacts with virtual machines, which is particularly useful in dual training and employee development. In this way, procedures for new equipment can be run through in just a few minutes, taking all safety precautions into account, which would be much more time-consuming in the real world. A nice bonus: visualizations and animations make invisible processes visible.

Web player:

By using the web player, it is also possible to integrate the tutorials into internal learning management systems (LMS) or anywhere on the customer's website. Using a QR code, the tutorials can also be linked and distributed via any channels - including conventional paper manuals or social media posts.

“We build a bridge between the real world of work and a digital future," says Johannes Nies, co-founder and CEO of craftguide. "We are united by an unspoken high appreciation for everything that is created with hands. With our platform, we want to bring together the great treasure of craft knowledge and make it accessible to the new generations in industry and education though future technologies.”

Easy entry for machine manufacturers into future technologies

craftguide provides manufacturers with a digital, scalable operating manual for different channels - without having to build up resources and know-how internally. The technician works more efficiently, which saves time and costs. The integration of latest technologies such as 3D, virtual and augmented reality also works without additional effort.

The digital content can be used for training purposes as well as in marketing and sales: Standardized procedures such as the assembly, maintenance or repair of machines and systems must be taught to each employee individually in a training course. Here, the craftguide courses help to reduce the training effort at home and abroad: Once produced, content is also available internationally in 36 languages.

The digital formats enable not only the manufacturer's employees to benefit, but also craftsmen, service partners and customers - from presentations of the product portfolio at trade fairs or in the online showroom to virtual walk-through project visualizations. The courses are also ideal for after-sales service.

Another advantage for manufacturers is that access can be configured individually for each course. This means that each user sees only what they are supposed to see ¬- whether in the app or via the web player in the browser.

Increasing the attractiveness of craft training with virtual courses

Educational institutions also get the opportunity to digitize their knowledge and pass it on to current and future professionals in a way that is appropriate for the target group. Each course is didactically structured according to the training requirements of the respective guild, which define a specific sequence of work steps and safety precautions. This benefits the trainees, who can continue their own training and repeat content regardless of their current learning level and location. Vocational schools and industrial-technical training centers also belong to craftguide's clientele.

Craftguide has just started a cooperation with the HVAC Guild Munich (sanitary, heating and air-conditioning technology): From now on, the approximately one thousand trainees can learn craft work techniques independently in interactive video tutorials from craftguide. Currently, more than 40 courses are available in the areas of electrical engineering (stripping cables), assembly technology (bending pipes) or plumbing (hard and soft soldering) Read more
